The begger

Sanika Bhonge 6th Girls

THE BEGGAR

There he sat on the bare street.
Desperate to make ends meet
Wistful-eyed thinking of his wife & sons
Working day and night, no rest, no fun

Carrying his bowl, old and tattered
But to him that didn’t matter
He only wanted a penny to fall
It was the only thing that mattered at all.

Praying fervently before every person here
Eyes wide in silent hope and fear
Ears eager to hear the sound
Of a coin hitting the bowl’s ground.

His hands shake, ready for the worst
Living life as if it were a curse
Making him struggle just for survival
Just being able to look at the better people

The beggar lives on the footpath there
The rough tiles, the dirty surface, but he doesn’t care
He just wants a mouthful everyday
Yes, that his living way

He eyes the rich and wealthy men
He eyes their comfy and luxurious den
He then wishes  at least for a bed
He broods over the life he’s led

Doesn’t he have a better choice
For a better life, when he can rejoice
He lives at the mercy of the people, when instead
He can earn money, and not just beg

He will be proud to earn and live
He would lead a life so good, he won’t  believe
He’s got in life many a hope
If with the possible harshness he can cope

He can, but right now, he is caught
In the web of the life that he’s got
For a better life, open are the gates
But when and how, will be decided by his fate

There he sat on the bare street
Desperate to make ends meet
Wistful-eyed thinking of his wife & sons
Working day and night, no rest, no fun
